Red blood cell (RBC) products are produced primarily from whole blood units but may also be collected by apheresis. RBC transfusions are indicated for the treatment of decreased oxygen-carrying capacity in the setting of anemia and decreased RBC mass. RBC products can be modified, such as by leukoreduction, irradiation, and washing, to meet the needs of patients. They are stored for up to 42 days at 1–6°C. During storage the cells undergo changes, termed the storage lesion, the clinical consequences of which are debatable.
