  • Add time:09/02/2019         Source:sciencedirect.com

Reagents based on samarium (Sm) and ytterbium (Yb) are becoming increasingly more important in organic synthesis as an alternative and selective methods for the synthesis of multifunctional targets become more important. Although initially considered esoteric reagents, their recognized importance in organic synthesis is a result of their versatility in mediating numerous, fundamentally important C–X π-bond addition reactions. This chapter is not intended to be a comprehensive review, but an overview of important C–X π-bond addition reactions mediated by Sm and Yb reagents. The chapter is organized by oxidation state and not metal identity since oxidation state establishes the reactivity of each metal-based reagent system. The main focus of work presented in this chapter is on studies carried out since the overview of Yb and Sm reagents written for the first edition of this volume. Only seminal studies before 1990 are presented.
