The aqueous-biphase hydrogenation of dimethyl itaconate has been accomplished with Rh(I) and Ir(I) complexes containing the monosulphonated derivative (R)-(R)-3-benzyl(p-sulphonate)-2,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)pentane [(R)-(R)-BDPBzPSO3−].
