The products of the thermal degradation of poly(2,3-dibromopropyl methacrylate) and poly(2,3-dibromopropyl acrylate) have been analysed quantitatively using thermal analysis, infra-red spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and gas-liquid chromatography. Monomer is the principal product from the former (55·8%) although the substituent groups react to some extent to produce HBr, CO2, allyl bromide, allyl methacrylate, chain fragments incorporating anhydride groups and other trace products. From the latter, HBr is the principal product (46·0%) with smaller amounts of CO2, chain fragments, allyl bromide and a variety of other products of side chain decomposition. Possible mechanisms for the formation of all these products are described and discussed.
