14N NQR frequencies have been measured at two temperatures in solid 4,4′-azoxyanisole (PAA) and 4,4′-bis(heptyloxy)azoxybenzene (HpAB) by the nuclear quadrupole double resonance techniques based on multiple frequency sweeps and two-frequency irradiation. Two sets of three 14N NQR lines have been determined in both compounds with a resolution of 5–10 kHz, which is much higher than the resolution of the field-cycling relaxometry used in a previous study [J. Seliger, R. Osredkar, M. Mali, R. Blinc, J. Chem. Phys. 65 (1976) 2887]. The two sets of NQR frequencies have been unambiguously assigned to two nitrogen positions, –N and –N(O), in both substances. All molecules within the unit cell are crystallographically equivalent in PAA as well as in HpAB. The present results are related to the results of the fast-field-cycling relaxometry and nuclear quadrupole double resonance in the liquid crystal phases of PAA and HpAB.
