  • Chapter 2 Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances as a Source for Compilino a List of Teratogens
  • Add time:07/14/2019         Source:sciencedirect.com

Publisher SummaryThis chapter presents a registry of toxic effects of chemical substances (RTEC). Significant efforts have been made to assemble teratogenic databases with peer-reviewed evaluations. New avenues for the structure–activity relationship (SAR) of teratogenic chemicals studies have been opened, such a s quantitative methods for structural superposition of molecules and for superposition of their reactivity characteristics. Emphasis has been placed on the electrostatic properties of the molecules, such as the molecular electrostatic potential, the electric fields, and the polarizability terms calculated from perturbation expansions. Computer-assisted multivariate SAR, which deals with many variables simultaneously, has been advanced. Chemists and workers in the chemical industry and various laboratories represent the population group most exposed to various chemicals of unknown teratogenicity. Often, this exposure stretches over a period of many years of reproductive potential. A question is posed about the best way of deciding whether a particular chemical should or should not be considered teratogenic, and, thus, how it should be handled.
