Lutetium oxyorthosilicate (LSO) exists in two different crystallographic phases, both with the monoclinic structure. The low-temperature polymorph, referred to as A-type LSO (A-LSO), crystallizes in space group P21/c, whereas the high-temperature polymorph, referred to as B-type LSO (B-LSO), crystallizes in space group C2/c. In this study, two different LSO powders with 0.5 at% Ce dopant were synthesized by a modified sol-gel method. The luminescence properties of the synthesized powders were investigated as a function of temperature by VUV-UV excitation measurements. The relationships between the crystal structure and luminescence properties of the two types of LSO were investigated, and are discussed here in detail.
