The synthesis and characterization of the complexes CuX2L2 {where X=CH3CHClCOO−, CH3CCl2COO− or ClCH2CHClCOO−, and L=nicotinamide (na), isonicotinamide (ina) or methyl-3-pyridylcarbamate (mpc)} are reported. Characterization of the compounds was based on elemental analysis, IR, electronic and EPR spectra. All the CuX2L2 compounds seem to possess octahedral copper(II) stereochemistry with differing tetragonal distortion. Complex [Cu(CH3CCl2COO)2(mpc)2] was also studied by X-ray analysis. The structure of [Cu(CH3CCl2COO)2(mpc)2] is centrosymmetric. The Cu(II) atom is pseudo-octahedrally trans-coordinated by four carboxylic oxygen atoms of α,α-dichloropropionate anions [Cu(1)–O(1)=1.959(2) Å (2×) and Cu(1)–O(2)=2.677(2) Å (2×)], and by two nitrogen atoms two methyl-3-pyridylcarbamate ligands [Cu(1)–N(1)=1.981(2) Å (2×)]. The antibacterial effects have been tested on various strains of bacteria, yeasts and micromycetes.
