Diphenylhydrazine occurs as two isomers, 1,1-diphenylhydrazine (530-50-7) and 1,2-diphenylhydrazine (122-66-7), the latter being used in the production of drugs. Most information pertains to 1,2-diphenylhydrazine. With a low vapor pressure and rapid oxidation to azobenzene, diphenylhydrazine is not expected to be a significant environmental contaminant. Information regarding toxicity in humans is lacking and animal toxicity data are limited. Chronic dietary exposure of rodents had caused liver and gastrointestinal effects, and decreased body weight gain. Based on limited data in animals, diphenylhydrazine is considered a potential human carcinogen.
