  • Chapter 26 - Unsaturated Polyester Resins
  • Add time:09/08/2019         Source:sciencedirect.com

This chapter describes the development of unsaturated polyester and related resins. The morphology of these cured resins is discussed with respect to their cure chemistry and mechanical properties. The curing systems are considered with respect to the choice of manufacturing process. The need for reinforcement with glass fibers is also considered. The form of glass fibers, continuous or discontinuous, and their textile configuration are discussed with regard to the achievable properties of the reinforced plastics or composites. The selection of glass fiber sizing and coupling agents and the formation of interfaces and interphases in the composites are described. The manufacturing techniques for composite materials from these resins are reviewed with regard to the choice of direct or indirect impregnation. The competition between mechanical performance, complexity of shape, and the rate of production are also considered.
