Platy dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD, CaPPO4.2H2O) and spherulitic dicalcium phosphate (DCP, CaHPO4), were crystallized in the presence of magnesium ions at physiological pH of 5.61 by a direct and controlled chemical reaction method. The grown crystals were characterized by X-ray diffraction analyses, scanning electron microscopic analyses and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopic analyses. The presence of magnesium changed the unit cell parameters and also altered the morphology of DCPD. Presence of magnesium inhibited the crystallization of DCPD and spherulitic DCP crystals. Microhardness studies showed that the hardness of DCPD crystals decreased with an increased concentration of magnesium ions.
