  • Excretion of N-acetylethionine sulfoxide by rats treated with ethionine
  • Add time:09/07/2019         Source:sciencedirect.com

N-Acetylethionine sulfoxide contained about 90% of the radioactivity excreted in the urine of control rats injected with [Et-1-14C]-ethionine. N-Acetylethionine sulfoxide was identified on the basis of its chromatography on paper with the chemically synthesized compound, its deacetylation to ethionine sulfoxide, and its reduction to N-acetylethionine. N-Acetylethionine sulfoxide was also the primary excretion product of control rats injected with [14C]ethinine sulfoxide. Injected N-[14C]- acetylethionine sulfoxide was almost quantitatively recovered in the urine. When either [Et-1-14C]ethionine of [14C]ethionine sulfoxide was injected into ethione-fed rats, about half of the radioactivity was excreted as ethione sufloxide and half as N-acetylethionine sulfoxide. N-[14C]Acethylethionine sulfoxide injected into ethionine-fed rats was excreted as N-acetylethionine sulfoxide. The major pathway for the metabolism of ethionine by the rat appears to be: ethionine→ethionine sulfoxide→ N-Acetylethionine sulfoxide.
