In this study, we investigated the effect of disodium cromoglycate (DSCG) against viral infection in vitro and in vivo, particularly against the human influenza virus infection. The in vivo effect of DSCG on viral infection was assessed by using a murine model of respiratory tract infection. Administration of DSCG by the intranasal route remarkably protected mice from death induced by infection with the influenza virus, A/PR/8/34. In conclusion, DSCG exerts an anti-influenza virus effect in vitro and in vivo, with an especially potent effect in vivo. These findings strongly encourage us to apply DSCG to anti-influenza virus chemotherapy in the clinical field.
