The thermal and photochemical stability of PVC samples stabilised by a combination of dibutyl tin bis iso-octyl thioglycollate (DOTG) and dibutyl tin maleate (DBM) has been studied.Their behaviour shows that: (i) The system is neither synergistic nor antagonistic with regard to thermal degradation, during which one can essentially observe the formation of DOTG by-products. (ii) The system is synergistic with respect to the photochemical yellowing of samples and antagonistic with respect to carbonyl growth and residual thermal stability. Certain degradation products of DOTG could have an important effect in these two processes.
