Aluminum (Al) is the third most common element in the Earth's crust, where it is present naturally in some 300 different feldspars, silicates, micas, and clays. Aluminum is a metallic element but is not found in nature in its metallic form. Aluminum is usually found in combination with other elements, as a salt, or in bauxite, which is refined to produce alumina (aluminum oxide, Al2O3) from which metallic Al is made. This review focuses on the potential health effects of exposure to Al and Al compounds in the general population. Exposures occurring in occupational settings, or to plants or animals that are not directly relevant to human health risk assessment, are outside the scope of this article.
