    There has been a history of using metal mordants in conjunction with natural dyes. Hence, metal mordants play a very vital role in natural dyeing; however, due to ecological reasons, the use of metal salts of copper, chromium, and tin has been not so much in use anymore. The reactivity of a natural dye to a fabric depends on the chemical structure of the dye and its adherence to the fabric molecule. The role of mordant is to act as a bridging head between the fabric and the dye molecule. The type of chemical bonding among the reactive sites thus contributes to dye uptake and dye adherence. Natural dyeing needs the presence of metal mordants for better color fixation. This is explained in this section and referred as structure- mordant interaction. Some metal mordants such as copper and chromium being labeled as hazardous need to be replaced by safer bridging entities such as biomordants (metal derived from plant sources) and enzymes.
