The crystal structure of a new mixed-valence terbium fluoride Rb2AlTb3F16 has been determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and refined to a conventional R=0.027 (Rω=0.031) from 298 independent reflections (29 parameters). This compound crystallizes in the hexagonal system, space group P63/mmc (n° 194) with a=7.556(6) Å and c=12.397(3) Å, Z=2. The three-dimensional framework is built of layers of composition (Tb3F16)5− stacked along the c axis and further linked by isolated (AlF6)3− octahedra. These (Tb3F16)5− layers are themselves built of edge-sharing (Tb3F22)11− structural units resulting from the association of three monocapped square antiprisms (TbF9) by sharing edges about a common corner. This polyhedral string delimits intersecting tunnels running along [100], [010] and [110] directions where the Rb+ ions lie in 12-coordination. Structural relationships with some oxyfluorides and fluorides are presented and discussed.
