The radical polymerization of disodium salt of 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene-1-phosphonic acid (isoprenephosphonic acid) in aqueous solutions has been investigated over a wide range of pH values. Relations of a bimodal type have been found between the pH of the medium and the polymerization rate and intrinsic viscosity of the polymers. The explanation advanced to account for the observed relations postulates the existence of a highly reactive monoionized isoprenephosphonic acid dimer that may be used to prepare high molecular phosphorus containing polyelectrolytes. It is shown that the increased rate of polymerization and higher intrinsic viscosity observed for the polymers in the pH interval 4·2–6·2 are due to the emergence of ion pairs at the ends of growing radicals.
