In this work, a green composite from poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), or P(3HB), grafted with 2-amino-ethyl methacrylate, hydroxylated resin and silica nanoparticles was developed. The goal was to determine if the new poly(urethane-urea) composite can work as an appropriate substrate for biological applications. The mechanism for the polyurea step-growth polymerization was proposed. The scaffolds showed an average porosity and degree of swelling of 55% and 7%, respectively, as well as a reinforced mechanical strength compared to that of P(3HB). This material effectively supported the growth of the mammalian HEK293 cell line, as demonstrated by epifluorescence and confocal microscopy.
