Poly (Evans blue) modified carbon paste electrode was prepared by electropolymerization method. The electrochemical determination of two major phenolic moieties namely catechol (CC) and hydroquinone (HQ) was performed at poly (Evans blue) modified carbon paste electrode (Evans blue/MCPE) by cyclic voltammetry in the PBS (0.2 M) at pH 7.4, with the sweep rate of 50 mV/s. The sensor showed good electrocatalytic activity towards the oxidation of dihydroxybenzene isomers. The effect of variation of sweep rate and pH on voltammograms of CC and HQ was studied. The lower limit of detection of CC and HQ was found to be 2.0 and 2.1 μM, respectively, and simultaneous determination was possible. The separation of oxidation peak potential of CC and HQ on this modified electrode was 212 mV in CV. The interference studies showed that the modified electrode exhibits excellent selectivity and sensitivity. Finally, the fabricated sensor was successfully applied for the determination of CC and HQ in lake water sample with satisfactory recovery.
