Crotonaldehyde is a liquid that is naturally found in some foods and also acts as an environmental pollutant. Crotonaldehyde is commercially used in the leather and rubber industry; therefore, people working with manufacturing such products are exposed to higher levels of this compound. Significant amounts of this chemical have been detected in automobile exhaust. Inhalation of tobacco smoke, gasoline and diesel engine exhausts, and smoke from wood burning are the predominant routes of human exposure to crotonaldehyde. Acute exposure causes irritation to eyes, skin, lungs, and mucous membranes, while chronic exposure can lead to neuropsychiatric and sexual disturbances. Environmental Protection Agency classifies this chemical as a possible human carcinogen.
