Complexes formation between aluminum ions and diglycolic and thiodiglycolic acids was studied at 25°C in 0·5 M NaClO4 by potentiometric measurements. In the investigated concentration ranges (−log|H+| < 3·5; 2·55 mM ⩽ CM ⩽ 7·66 mM; 2·0 mM ⩽ CL ⩽ 12·5 mM) expe data can be explained for the aluminum diglycolate (DG2−) with the formation of two mononuclear complexes and for the aluminum thiodiglycolate (TDG2−) with the formation of a 1 : 1 complex and a mixed complex with OH−, according to the equilibria: Al3+ + DG2− ⇌ AlDG+log β1 = 3·16 ± 0·012Al3+ + 2DG2− ⇌ Al(DG)2−log β2 = 5·25 ± 0·02Al3+ + TDG2− ⇌ AlTDG+log β1 = 1·93 ± 0·08Al3+ + OH− + TDG2− ⇌ AlOHTDGlog β11 = 12·34 ± 0·05
