  • Laser-powered homogeneous decomposition of Isobornyl acetate (cas 125-12-2): Evidence for rearrangement reactions in the gas phase

Continuous-wave CO2 laser-photosensitized (sulfur hexafluoride) decomposition of isobornyl acetate is a complex reaction affording ethene, bornylene, camphene, tricyclene, trimethylcyclopentadienes and toluene as major products. Primary cleavage of acetic acid occurs via both cis-1,2-elimination (affording bornylene) and elimination involving rearrangements from proximal positions (yielding tricyclene and camphene). Rearrangements are favored at higher temperatures and bornylene undergoes retro-Diels-Alder reaction that is faster than decomposition of isobornyl acetate. Truly homogeneous conditions ensure that the rearrangement reactions take place without participation of stabilizing interaction from the reactor surface.
