Publisher SummaryMethyprylon is 3,3-diethyl-5-methyl-2,4-piperidinedione. Methyprylon occurs as a white to nearly white crystalline powder. It has a slight characteristic odor. Methyprylon contains a n assymetric center at the 5-carbon in the ring. However, the racemic mixture is obtained from the synthesis and no optical activity is exhibited. When methyprylon i s refluxed i n acidic, neutral, or basic aqueous solutions i n the presence of oxygen, it break down into several carboxylic acids; e.g. formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, and diethyl acetic acid. Traces of unidentified amines and ketones are also observed. When pure methyprylon is stored in well-closed, light resistant containers, the substance is quite stable. This chapter highlights the physical properties, synthesis, stability degradation, metabolic products, and methods of analysis of methyprylon.
