The preparation and properties of the copper(II) complex Cu(MK-H)2·2H2O are reported for the anti- inflammatory drug 2-aminomethyl-4(1,1-dimethylethyl) -6-iodophenol (MK-447). The diffuse reflectance spectra and magnetic moments are consistent with a tetragonally distorted pseudo-octahedral environment around the copper(II) ion. The infrared spectra, indicate that MK-447 acts as a chelate mono- anionic ligand with coordination involving the phenolate oxygen atom and the nitrogen atom of the aminomethyl group. The copper(II) complex exhibits marked superoxide dismutase activity in the nitroblue tetrazolium assay.
