Methods of synthesis of the title compounds are described. The most widespread and frequently used method is the reaction of an alkynyl metal derivative (usually an alkynyllithium or alkynylmagnesium, less frequently an alkynylstannane) with an appropriate halide to form the alkynyl–element bond. Most of the other methods described involve the modification of a preformed alkynylelement compound by reaction at the element center (e.g., oxidation or reduction) or, in the case of ethynyl derivatives, at the alkyne terminus (e.g., by cross-coupling).
