1,2,3,4-Thiatriazole is a relatively rare heterocyclic system. In the present chapter we have compared the data from recent publications with an overview of previous work. Thus, the previous chapters in CHEC(1984) and CHEC-II(1996) should be read together with the following chapter in order to get a really comprehensive view of the field.Sections 5.19.2 and 5.19.3 give an overview of the theoretical work, and the experimental chemical methods on the structure of 1,2,3,4-thiatriazole including nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), ultraviolet (UV), infrared (IR), Raman spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. Often a comparison with the isomeric 1,2,3,5-thiatriazole and other sulfur containing system is made. The following Sections 5.19.5–5.19.8 give an overview of the reactivity of the labile 1,2,3,4-thiatriazole ring system, respectively, of fully conjugated rings, of nonconjugated rings, of substituents attached to ring carbons, and of substituents attached to heteroatoms. Sections 5.19.9–5.10.10 describe the ring synthesis of 1,2,3,5-thiatriazoles, either from acyclic fragments or by ring transformation. We conclude with two Sections 5.19.11 and 5.19.12 dealing with particular classes of compounds and applications. The chapter includes 42 chemical schemes, 19 equations, 7 tables, 5 figures, and 152 references.
