The syntheses and characterizations of two new amine oxime ligands are described. In addition, the crystal structure of the dihydrochloride salt of the previously reported 2-[N-(4-aminobenzyl)amino-3-methyl-2-butanone oxime (aminobenzAO) is reported. This structure features a three-dimensional network of hydrogen bonds involving the amine and oxime groups, the chloride ions and the water molecule of crystallization. The crystal structure of the nickel(II) complex of this ligand, [Ni(aminobenzAO)2]ClO4, is reported. This structure features near square planar bonding of the two oxime nitrogen atoms and the two aliphatic amine nitrogen atoms to the nickel(II) atom with dangling aromatic amine groups. A strong intramolecular O---O hydrogen bond links the two cis oxime groups. Because of crystallization difficulty only a qualitative crystal structure of the rhodium(III) complex of the corresponding 4-nitrobenzyl ligand [Rh(nitrobenzAO)2 Cl2] is included. The octahedral structure is analogous to previously reported complexes with cis oxime nitrogen atoms, cis amine nitrogen atoms and trans chloride ligands.
