Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) studies of 4-Bromopyridine (cas 1120-87-2) (4BP) adsorbed on colloidal AuPt alloy particles with 0, 1, 5, and 25 g% Pt show the same spectral features as that of 4BP adsorbed on pure Au particles. The excitation profile of major Raman bands of 4BP on alloy particles peaks at the same wavelength as the extinction band ascribed to the dipolar plasma resonance due to aggregates of alloy particles, as in the case of pure Au particles. These facts suggest that the SERS observed on the alloy particles exclusively arises from the 4BP adsorbed on the Au component. SERS, intensity is found to decrease markedly with increasing Pt concentration. This quenching is attributed to the introduction of the Pt d states which act as effective decay channels to the favorable freeelectron-like characteristics of Au.
