The responses of Charles River and Fischer-344 rats to dietary 1·5% nitrilotriacetic acid and 2% trisodium nitrilotriacetate, monohydrate were compared in a 4-wk feeding study. The Charles River rats consumed more nitrilotriacetate (μmol/kg body weight/day) than the Fìscher-344 rats. In spite of the different ingestion rates, the two strains of animals gave similar qualitative responses to nitrilotriacetate. The ingestion of nitrilotriacetate was associated with reduced growth, increased kidney/body weight ratio, increased urinary Ca, haematuria, and the presence of crystalline CaNaNTA in the urine.
