Silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) and catechol are extensively used in various purposes for the benefits of human needs. Thus, functionalization of Ag-NPs with catechol is demanding for better prospects but a difficult task. In this paper, we have attempted to functionalize Ag-NPs indirectly and report the functionalization of citrate-capped Ag-NPs (cit-Ag-NPs), which was prepared by the citrate reduction and stabilization method, with catechol in the aqueous solution. The change of surface Plasmon resonance (SPR) of cit-Ag-NPs at 443 nm was monitored in the presence of the catechol using time-scan UV–Vis spectroscopy. The study evidences that the catechol molecules interact kinetically with the surface adsorbed citrate ions without the onset of any aggregations. The actual rate of the functionalization was determined to be 2.52 m−1  s−1. The optimum concentration of the catechol for functionalization of cit-Ag-NPs under study is 35μM. The particle sizes determined using a transmission electron microscope (TEM) of cit-Ag-NPs in absence and presence of catechol, are nearly equal to 51 ± 1 nm. The neutral catechol forms association complex with the surface adsorbed citrate ions through H-bonds, and the evaluated association constant is found to be (4.61 ± 0.5)×107 M−1. The catechol functionalized cit-Ag-NPs show significant anti-biofilm activity against gram-negative Pseudomonas aeruginosa and gram positive Bacillus subtilis bacteria. So, cit-Ag-NPs coupled with catechol molecules would be the attractive material for the purposes they have been independently employed.
