A study was undertaken to determine the teratogenic potential of tris-(2,3-dibromopropyl) phosphate (TRIS), the flame retardant formerly used in clothing. TRIS, in undiluted propylene glycol, was orally intubated into pregnant Sprague-Dawley rats on days 6–15 of gestation at a level of 0, 5, 25 or 125 mg/kg/day. A group of untreated females served as a negative control group. Weight gain during gestation was significantly decreased in the animals treated with 125 mg/kg/day, but no other compound-related toxic or teratogenic effects were observed.
