    The oxidative coupling of phenols or phenol ethers belongs to the category of those venerable organic reactions that continue to sustain the interest of chemists even after more than a century and a half of relentless investigations. Aside from its use as a convenient means to rapidly access useful functionalized biaryl and diaryl ether motifs, and key transformation in the biosynthetic elaboration of numerous natural products, it is not surprising that this class of oxidation reactions occupies a place of choice in the organic chemist toolbox.
