Chlorfenvinphos (CAS 470-90-6) is an organophosphorus insecticide manufactured for insecticidal use. All uses and sales in the United States were banned in 1991 and in the European Union in 2006. It continues to be an important veterinary medicine for controlling livestock ectoparasites in Australia and New Zealand. Chlorfenvinphos has low persistence outdoors. Without requiring metabolic activation, chlorfenvinphos inhibits acetylcholinesterase in nervous tissues leading to cholinergic hyperstimulation. Human exposure occurs mainly through skin contact, air dispersion, and leaching from hazardous waste disposal sites. Chlorfenvinphos is acutely toxic, causes developmental, reproductive, and immunologic effects, but not shown to cause cancer. Chlorfenvinphos exhibits high toxicity to nontarget organisms.
