The application of the normal infra-red methods to the investigation and analysis of complicated technical detergents, such as alkyl sulphonates, alkyl-aryl sulphonates and monoalkyl sulphates, requires the conversion of these compounds into derivatives which are soluble in the organic solvents that must be employed. It was found that the cyclohexylammonium (CHA) salts, which can be prepared from the original sodium salts and CHA chloride, satisfy these solubility requirements and others imposed by the infra-red technique.Between 1500 and 3200 crn−1 the CHA-salts display the spectral features of the NH3+ group so that the presence of ion-pair molecules is indicated. Between 500 and 1300 cm−1 prominent bands assignable to “internal” vibrations of the -SO3− group are found amongst others. Moreover, one or more bands observed around 800 cm−1 in the spectra of mono-alkyl sulphates were interpreted as due to vibrations essentially involving a stretching of the covalent S-O bond, Marked differences between the spectra according to the physical state (solution or solid) are related to rotational isomerism. Some applications of the spectra are indicated.
