The surface chemistry of phenyl cyanate (cas 1122-85-6) and phenol on Al(111) was investigated by temperature-programmed desorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy between 100 and 800 K. Chemisorption of the initial monolayer occurred via cleavage of the OCN bond for phenyl cyanate and the OH bond for phenol. A surface phenoxide species was formed for both cases that decomposed further to yield a chemisorbed phenyl group. Ultimately, benzene and hydrogen were observed as desorption products. Carbide and oxide remained on the surface as decomposition products for both molecules, while a nitride species also remained after phenyl cyanate decomposition.
