This chapter summarizes the fundamentals and applications of cyanate ester resins. The monomers used for this are also discussed. The cyanate esters are used for rheological properties and are synthesized by the reaction of phenols with cyanogen halides. Special additives are used that increase the conductivity and dielectric constant. Based on a study of the curing reaction, a kinetic model with variable reaction order has been proposed to describe the curing of such resins. Curing with various methods is discussed briefly. Cyanate monomers have low toxicity; the curing behavior under process conditions has been modeled. The various applications and uses in composites, spacecraft, and industries are summarized. Cyanate ester resins are a new generation of thermosetting resins and exhibit attractive physical, electrical, thermal, and processing properties.
