A study has been made of the Ulman polycondensation of potassium p-bromophenolate in a diphenyl oxide medium. In view of the heterogeneity of the system the reaction takes place in two stages, the first being a process of transformation of solid bromophenolate with formation of low molecular α-bromo-ω-hydroxyoligophenylene oxides, which proceeds with considerable heat evolution, while the second stage is that of the subsequent polycondensation of these oligomers. The use of p-dibromobenzene as molecular mass regulator is compatible with optimum conditions of preparation of α,ω-dibromoligophenylene oxides with a molecular mass in the range 600–1700, fixed by the monomer/regulator molar ratio.
