The complex LPdCl2 (L=(4-ethoxyphenyl)[(2-amino-5-methyl)phenyl] telluride) was prepared by reaction of the ligand with Li2PdCl4 in methanol solution. Red prismatic crystals (LPdCl2·DMSO·H2O) suitable for X-ray analysis were obtained by slow evaporation from DMSO–H2O mixed solvent. This is the first well-characterized palladium(II) complex containing a bidentate (N and Te) ligand (space group P1̄; a=12.068(2), b=12.651(2), c=8.186(2) Å; α=99.74(2), β=94.22(2), γ=63.07(1)°; R=0.035, Rw=0.062). Two unidentate chloride ions are coplanar with the Pd, N and Te atoms of the ligand. The metal environment is a distorted planar geometry. The two Pd–Cl bonds are inequivalent; one Pd–Cl (Pd–Cl(2), 2.371 Å) distance is much longer than the other (Pd–Cl(1), 2.301 Å).
