Absorption and fluorescence spectra obtained in various solvents indicate that the amino group acts as a hydrogen acceptor in the S0 state and a hydrogen donor in the S1 state. The lack of correspondence between the disappearance of 6-aminochrysene (CNH2) and the appearance of CNH3+ in the fluorometric titration is due to proton-induced quenching of the 6-aminochrysene. The value of the quenching constant is about 109 dm3 mol−1 s−1.
