Spectral and ion binding properties of the new synthesized benzo-15-crown-5 RUBICENE (cas 197-61-5) dye (Rubi-B15C5) have been investigated by the steady-state fluorescence spectroscopy. Since the new compound possesses a benzo-15-crown-5 ionophore unit, the complexation ability of the dye towards alkali metal ions was expected. Therefore, the new dye with long wavelengths of excitation and emission wavelengths was used for detection of K+ in organic solvent. Upon binding of potassium ion, the fluorescence quantum yield as well as the fluorescence intensity of the dye at excitation and emission maxima decreased. The ground-state dissociation constant and stoichiometry of Rubi-B15C5 ⊂ K+ complex have a value of 30.7 ± 4.1 µ M and 1:1, respectively.
