A sensitive method for the determination of nitrites is proposed. The method should also be applicable to the determination of nitrogen dioxide. The test consists of the reaction of 4-amino azobenzene and I-naphthylamine with nitrous acid to form the blue di-cation of 4-(p-phenylazophenylazo)-I-naphthylamine. Beer's law was obeyed from 0.5 to over 15 mg of nitrite ion per 15 ml of final solution. Spectrophotometrically it is possible to detect I part of nitrite ion in 60 million parts of solution.
