Publisher SummaryThis chapter discusses the cytotoxic and antitumor antibiotics produced by microorganisms. Microorganisms are among the most prolific producers of new biologically active compounds. Many antibiotics are able to suppress or retard the growth of tumors; an extensive effort has been made in many laboratories to find new antibiotics with antineoplastic properties, either by screening new soil isolates or by chemical modification of the existing antibiotics. This chapter provides information on 373 antibiotics possessing antineoplastic properties for which reasonably complete data is available. It discusses the names and synonyms of 373 antibiotics with reported antineoplastic activities and is listed in alphabetical order, and presents a list of the most common experimental tumors.
