Publisher SummaryThis chapter discusses the snake venom toxins that act on nerve and muscle. Although the chapter uses a system of classification, classifying many toxins from snake venoms is difficult. Several factors contribute to the difficulty. The most common of these factors considered are incorrect identification of the snake from which the crude venom was obtained, contaminated venom samples, impure toxic fractions, and variation in experimental technique used by different laboratories. The chapter discusses toxins acting on nerve and muscle that are differentiated into one of these four categories: the postsynaptically active neurotoxins, the presynaptically active neurotoxins, the myotoxic toxins, and the cytotoxic toxins. The majority of toxins included in this category are the so-called “curarimimetic toxins” that block neuromuscular transmission at the skeletal neuromuscular junction.
