A new Ni(II) optical chemical sensor (optode) based on immobilizing of 2-amino-1-cyclopentene-1-dithiocarboxylic acid (ACDA) to transparent acetyl cellulose film was developed. The sensor was fabricated by binding ACDA to a cellulose acetate film that had previously been subjected to an exhaustive base hydrolysis. The sensing membrane is homogeneous, transparent, and mechanically stable and showed no evidence of reagent leaching. The membrane has good durability and response time. The detectable concentration of nickel in a sample solution was in the range of 5.0×10−6 to 1.0×10−3 M with a limit of detection of 5.2×10−7 M (0.03 μg/ml) Ni(II). The influence of pH, reagent concentration and time of immobilization of the reagent onto the film, pH and time of determination of Ni(II) was optimized. In addition, the influence of potential interfering ions on the determination of Ni(II) was studied and a suitable and successive method also was used for the elimination of interfering ions. The sensor was used for determination of nickel in hydrogenated vegetable oil and alloys.
