The IR spectra of HEXACHLORODISILOXANE (cas 14986-21-1), (SiCl3)2O, in argon, krypton and nitrogen matrices have been investigated in the region from 1500–200 cm−1. The data in all three of the matrices are unusual in that the antisymmetric Si-O-Si stretch is a doublet. The maximum separation of the doublet is found in the nitrogen matrix where the bands are at 1117 and 1147 cm−1. The average of these two frequencies, 1132 cm−1, compares well with the gas phase value of 1131 cm−1. for this normal mode. In the low frequency Raman spectrum of the gas the Si-O-Si bend is observed as a broad structureless line with a maximum near 50 cm−1. The vibrational data can best be interpreted on the basis of a quasi-linear molecule, but with a sufficiently high barrier to linearity so that the molecule obeys C2v symmetry selection rules for the fluid phases.
