Aliphatic methanesulfonates (mesylates) are obtained in high yields by reacting the corresponding alcohols with methanesulfonyl chloride. Reactions of mesylates proceed specifically and result in good yields. When working with unsaturated compounds, isomerization does not occur. Thus, mesylates have been shown to be versatile intermediates in lipid synthesis. This review covers the reactions for the preparation of long-chain hydrocarbons, halides, aldehydes, cyanides, amines, acids, esters and ethers. The procedures are well worked out and have found wide application for the synthesis of radioactively labelled compounds and in spin label chemistry. Reaction mechanisms and potential new applications are discussed.
