The inhibition mechanism of quinomycin (cas 11113-76-1) A on the multiplication of phage T2 was investigated. The antibiotic inhibited the multiplication of phage progeny without measurable interference with the synthesis of the phage DNA, RNA or protein (coat protein, tail fiber and possibly lysozyme). Phage DNA synthesized in the presence of quinomycin A was neither sedimentable by centrifugation at 20 000 × g for 60 min, nor precipitable by anti-T2 serum. Therefore, it is assumed that quinomycin A inhibits phage development at a step during maturation, possibly in association of DNA and head protein.
