The Raman spectra of methylphosphorodichloridate, CH3OP(O)Cl2, and ethylphosphorodichloridate, CH3CH2OP(O)Cl2, have been measured in the liquid and solid states. Rotational isomerism about the COP(O) bond has been investigated on the basis of normal coordinate treatment. CH3OP(O)Cl2 has two rotational isomers, trans (T) and gauche (G) forms, in the liquid state and the T form persists in the solid state. Two different spectra have been obtained in this state and the molecular conformation is the same as T form in both the solid phases. For CH3CH2OP(O)Cl2, trans-trans (TT) and trans-gauche (TG) forms are present in the liquid state and only the TT form exists in the solid state. The enthalpy differences between the isomers for both the molecules are measured.
