Sodium stearate Uses

Sodium stearate works by helping to break fat and oil droplets into small pieces.The hydrocarbon chains attached to the fat, leaving the sodium ends dangling in the water.Then the oils are now completely surrounded by water,  and so they wash away in the rinse.

Synthesis:
Sodium stearate can be made in the laboratory by combining stearic acid and glycerol in a heated environment with 2-step reaction :

6 C17H35COOH + 2 C3H5(OH)3 → 2 C3H5(C18H35O2)3 + 3 H2O

C3H5(C18H35O2)3 + 3 NaOH → C3H5(OH)3 + 3 C17H35COONa
